Jamaica endures Hurricane Beryl as storm’s center grazes coast

Beryl, a Category 5 hurricane, caused widespread destruction and at least seven deaths across the Caribbean, including in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Venezuela, and Barbados. The storm has weakened slightly but is expected to remain at major hurricane status as it approaches the Cayman Islands and Jamaica. Authorities have warned residents in low-lying or flood-prone areas to evacuate to safer ground. For newlyweds Casey and Warner Haley, stranded in Montego Bay on their honeymoon, there were no available flights out of the area, leaving them to hunker down at their resort. The couple described the scene at the airport and grocery store as chaotic and packed as people prepared for the storm. A mandatory evacuation has not been ordered at the resort, but guests have been given the option to seek shelter in a conference room. The storm has caused widespread devastation and displacement, highlighting the need for emergency preparedness and response in vulnerable areas.
