Public works officials in Indianapolis are set to present their first findings from a new traffic safety effort on July 16. Crash investigators have completed their review of three years’ worth of crashes at the intersections of Kessler and Binford Boulevards, as well as 79th Street and Michigan Road. They are looking at factors such as time of day and weather conditions to identify patterns that could improve safety.
The review was directed by the City-County Council in January and focuses on crashes resulting in incapacitating injuries or fatalities. The intersections of 79th and Michigan and Binford and Kessler saw a significant number of crashes over the past three years, with several resulting in serious injuries.
The Fatal Crash Review Team will consider short and long-term solutions for these intersections, including potential traffic calming measures, improved crosswalks, or better lighting. The team will present its findings on July 16 and begin implementing recommendations shortly thereafter.
The team will review a total of six intersections each year, but has not yet selected the other four for this year. This comprehensive approach to traffic safety aims to reduce the number of serious crashes in Indianapolis and make roads safer for all residents.
