Indiana Republican Party Chairwoman Anne Hathaway has announced that she will step down from her role once a successor is chosen later this month. This decision comes after Hathaway made party history in August by becoming the first woman to lead the state party. In addition to Hathaway, executive director Joe Elsener will also be stepping down. Hathaway informed the Republican state central committee of her decision after being unanimously reelected as Indiana’s national committeewoman to represent the state on the Republican National Committee.
Senator Mike Braun’s senior advisor had previously stated that the party leadership changes would be up to Hathaway when Governor Eric Holcomb was still in office. The Republican state committee is expected to elect a new chair on June 24, likely a recommendation from the Braun campaign. One potential replacement for Hathaway is Daviess County GOP chair Janet Schuler-Hicks, who works for Senator Braun’s office.
The announcement of Hathaway’s resignation comes after the state Republican convention where delegates chose Micah Beckwith, a conservative pastor, as the lieutenant governor candidate, rejecting Senator Braun’s endorsed running mate. Hathaway had previously stated that she would serve through the primary elections and the state convention. She is currently leading the RNC’s committee on arrangements for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee where Donald Trump is expected to be nominated as the Republican candidate for president. Hathaway’s decision to step down allows for a new leader to bring fresh ideas and help Republicans in Indiana win in November.
