Indiana University has recently approved the construction of a new $110 million athletics center on its downtown Indianapolis campus. The facility will be located south of Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hall and will include a basketball/volleyball court with seating for 4,500 spectators, a multipurpose arena, office spaces, and training facilities. The center will provide opportunities for collegiate and high school sports, recreational activities, and community gathering spaces, aiming to engage residents and visitors of all ages.
Funded through $89 million in state appropriations and $21 million from IU Indianapolis, the facility is part of Indiana’s biennial budget for an amateur sports facility. University officials believe that the project will contribute to the growth of IU Indianapolis as a hub of activity for the city and surrounding region, supporting Jaguar sports, university activities, and events for various organizations. The center is expected to be a transformative project for the campus, strengthening the university’s tradition of athletic excellence and enhancing community engagement.
The next steps for the project include further consideration and approval by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education and the state’s budget committee. Once completed, the athletics center is poised to become a valuable resource for both the university and the Indianapolis community, offering a state-of-the-art facility for indoor sports, events, and recreational programs.
