Pastor Micah Beckwith broke tradition when he was nominated as Indiana’s Republican lieutenant governor candidate over state Rep. Julie McGuire. Beckwith, a Noblesville pastor, won the delegate vote at the state GOP convention and will be running alongside gubernatorial candidate Mike Braun in November.
Beckwith has a background in politics, serving on various boards and running for Congress in 2020. He has campaigned for over a year, emphasizing his role as a check on the governor’s power. As lieutenant governor, Beckwith aims to combat “aggressive woke culture” and prioritize issues such as education, property taxes, gun rights, and term limits.
Beckwith’s nomination bucks traditional roles for lieutenant governors, setting him apart from McGuire, Braun’s initial choice for the position. The Democratic Party has yet to choose a lieutenant gubernatorial candidate, with Libertarian Tonya Hudson serving as their pick.
Democratic leaders have already criticized the Braun-Beckwith ticket as extreme and dangerous, while Beckwith and Braun are focused on working together to achieve their goals. The November election will see Braun and Beckwith face off against Democratic candidate Jennifer McCormick and Libertarian Donald Rainwater.
Despite criticism from the opposing party, the Republican ticket is confident in their ability to secure victories in the upcoming election. Beckwith’s campaign priorities align more closely with the responsibilities of a governor rather than a lieutenant governor, signaling a shift in the traditional roles.
