The rare sight of Vanuatu’s dugongs: measuring their vulnerability | Global development

Vanuatu’s Dugongs at Risk Due to Climate Change

One of Vanuatu’s unique marine species, the dugong, is facing threats to its survival due to climate change. These gentle sea creatures, closely related to manatees, are known for feeding on seagrass in the waters of Havannah Bay on the island of Efate. However, their populations are in decline, with sightings becoming increasingly rare.

A local marine science student, Heidi Joy, recalls a time when dugongs were a common sight in the area but now, encounters are infrequent. The lack of data on their numbers and distribution in Vanuatu is hindering conservation efforts. Experts are calling for a national assessment to determine the status of these vulnerable creatures and the seagrass habitats they rely on.

Climate-related events like cyclones and storms are damaging the seagrass meadows, which are essential to dugongs’ survival. Increased sedimentation and loss of sunlight due to extreme weather are impacting the availability of seagrass, forcing dugongs to travel farther for food and leading to their decline in condition.

The government of Vanuatu has taken steps to protect dugongs by signing international agreements and implementing local conservation measures like tabu, which restricts hunting. However, more research and monitoring are needed to understand the current status of dugongs and seagrass in the region to guide conservation efforts effectively.

As the impacts of climate change continue to threaten the habitat of dugongs in Vanuatu, urgent action is needed to ensure the survival of these iconic marine mammals. By raising awareness and investing in research and conservation initiatives, stakeholders hope to secure a future for dugongs in the waters of Vanuatu.
