Ed Simcox, a prominent figure in Indiana Republican politics, has recently published a book titled “He Leadeth Me” that delves into his Christian faith and passion for prison reform. Despite his conservative beliefs, Simcox’s focus on criminal justice issues sets him apart, with a strong interest in visiting inmates and advocating for community corrections programs.
Simcox’s faith was ignited at a Billy Graham Crusade in 1959 and was further reinforced by the conversion of Charles Colson, a former Nixon lawyer who started Prison Fellowship after his own incarceration. Inspired by his encounters with prisoners, Simcox became an advocate for prison alternatives for nonviolent offenders and spearheaded the community corrections initiative in Indiana during the 1980s.
The former Secretary of State is noted for his dedication to prayer, hosting a bipartisan prayer group for two decades where politicians would pray for each other’s personal and family matters. This practice of coming together in prayer fostered friendships across party lines and offered a peaceful alternative to political divisions.
Simcox’s book, which features reflections and stories from his experiences, highlights how faith and prayer can bridge political differences and foster understanding and respect among individuals with differing beliefs.
