Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has reported a significant decrease in violent crime halfway through 2024 compared to the previous year. According to IMPD statistics, murders have decreased by nearly 17%, non-fatal shooting victims are down 13%, robberies have decreased by 17%, and aggravated assaults are down by 33%.
IMPD credits the decrease in crime to the increased engagement of the community. They have noticed more people reaching out and expressing their desire to tackle crime in their neighborhoods. While IMPD is encouraged by the numbers, they stress that even one victim is one too many, and there is still work to be done to further reduce crime rates.
Moving forward, IMPD plans to continue focusing on targeting individuals who possess guns and are involved in criminal activities. By identifying specific locations and areas with high crime rates, IMPD hopes to proactively address and prevent criminal activities.
IMPD emphasized the importance of continued community engagement to sustain the decrease in crime rates. Sergeant Anthony Richardson stated that working together with the community is vital to achieving a safer environment for all residents.
While IMPD acknowledges the progress made in reducing crime rates, they remain committed to their goal of creating a safer and more secure city for everyone. They urge the community to stay involved and support their efforts to combat crime effectively.
