The Lake County Democratic Party has officially endorsed Destiny Wells as their preferred candidate for Indiana attorney general. During a meeting, party leaders overwhelmingly agreed to support Wells, stating that she is the best choice to beat incumbent Todd Rokita in the fall elections. Although the endorsement is nonbinding, the party intends to report their decision to delegates attending the Democratic State Party Convention in July to encourage them to consider supporting Wells as the Democratic nominee for attorney general.
Wells, an attorney and military officer, is competing against former Marion County Clerk Beth White for the Democratic attorney general nomination. Despite the competition, Wells expressed gratitude for the support from the Democratic leaders of Indiana’s second-most populous county.
The Indiana Republican Party nominated Todd Rokita for a second term as attorney general last month, and Micah Beckwith for lieutenant governor. The Democratic nominee for governor is former state schools chief Jennifer McCormick, while U.S. Sen. Mike Braun will represent the Republicans. Governor Eric Holcomb, the incumbent, is barred by the Indiana Constitution from serving more than two consecutive terms.
In other news, new laws, including regulations on boundary markers, contraceptives, and dog sales, have come into effect in Indiana, aiming to address various issues in the state. These laws cover a wide range of topics, including employee age restrictions for serving alcohol, food and beverage taxes, and the prohibition of certain individuals or businesses from purchasing real property within 10 miles of military installations or farmland in Indiana.
