A black bear known as Yellow 2291 recently captured in Chatsworth, California, after wandering from Claremont, has been tracked by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The female bear roamed through LA County, crossing freeways and eventually making it to Malibu before turning back towards the San Fernando Valley. The bear was released back into the Angeles National Forest, where she will be tracked using a GPS collar that can last up to 2 years.
According to experts, the bear’s extensive journey is not fully understood, but they hope ongoing research will provide more insight into bear behavior. The agency ensures that the collars they use on bears are lightweight and not restrictive. Jessica West, an environmental scientist with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, stated that bears remain mysterious in many ways, and Yellow 2291’s movements were closely monitored as she was guided back to suitable habitat.
With their incredible homing skills, bears like Yellow 2291 are able to navigate through urban areas and highways in search of familiar territory.
