The Indiana Democratic candidate for governor, Jennifer McCormick, has announced Terry Goodin as her pick for lieutenant governor. Goodin, a former Indiana representative, emphasized rural development and support for traditional public schools in their administration. He also expressed regret for past conservative votes and pledged advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and access to abortion services.
Goodin, who currently serves as the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Indiana state director for rural development, has a background in education and agriculture. McCormick’s selection of Goodin will need to be approved by delegates at the Indiana Democratic Party Convention in July.
The Indiana Republican Party criticized McCormick for aligning with what they perceive as radical liberal ideas, while the Indiana Democratic Party praised Goodin’s advocacy for various groups and his potential to lead progress for the state.
McCormick and Goodin will face Republican candidate Mike Braun and Libertarian nominee Donald Rainwater in the upcoming gubernatorial race. Democrats have not won a statewide office in Indiana since 2012.
The race is expected to bring contrasting perspectives to voters, with Republicans emphasizing conservative values and Democrats promoting progressive policies. The selection of Goodin as McCormick’s running mate highlights the campaign’s focus on rural development, education, and advocacy for marginalized communities.
