News: Indiana Reports First Human Case of West Nile Virus

Indiana health officials have confirmed the first human case of West Nile virus in the state, with the reported case located in Lake County near Chicago. While mosquitoes have tested positive for the virus in 15 counties, none of them are in the Wabash Valley. State Health Commissioner Lindsay Weaver, M.D., FACEP, emphasized the importance of taking precautions to prevent mosquito bites, as they can lead to serious illness.

To reduce the risk of contracting the virus, the Indiana Department of Health recommends using insect repellent containing DEET, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating breeding sites for mosquitoes such as standing water in containers. Homeowners, landlords, and property managers are also advised to install screens on windows and doors, remove containers that can hold water, and maintain properties and landscaping in good condition.

It’s important for individuals to be vigilant in protecting themselves and their surroundings from mosquitoes to prevent the spread of West Nile virus. By following these guidelines, Hoosiers can take proactive steps to safeguard their health and well-being during mosquito season. If you experience symptoms such as fever, headaches, body aches, or rash after being bitten by a mosquito, seek medical attention promptly to receive appropriate treatment and care.
