In June, sports betting spending in Indiana fell for the third consecutive month, according to data from the Indiana Gaming Commission. Although the state saw a 33.1% increase in sports betting handle compared to the previous year, the $298.2 million wagered was 23% lower than the $361.6 million in May. Revenue from the state’s 16 retail sportsbooks and 12 sports betting apps totaled $30.5 million, a 56.4% increase from the previous year but down 21.8% from May’s $39 million. Baseball was the most popular sport to bet on, with $83.5 million in wagers, while basketball saw a 38.3% year-on-year increase to reach $33.3 million. Operators paid $2.9 million in taxes to the state in June.
Overall, the sports betting handle for the year-to-date in Indiana is $1.11 billion. This decline in sports betting spending comes despite an increase in sports betting revenue compared to the previous year. With only baseball in action as the major league, it appears that the sports betting industry in Indiana is facing challenges in maintaining the high levels of wagering seen in previous months. This data is part of a larger trend in the sports betting industry, which has been impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and changes in sporting events schedules. Despite these challenges, the sports betting industry in Indiana remains a significant contributor to the state’s economy and tax revenue.
