Mexican President Describes Donald Trump as ‘a Friend,’ Vows to Advise Against Border Closure

Mexico’s outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, referred to former U.S. president Donald Trump as a friend and a man of intelligence and vision, despite Trump’s past threats to close the U.S.-Mexico border. López Obrador plans to write a letter to Trump warning against blaming migrants for bringing drugs to the United States and advocating for the closure of the border, as it would have negative effects on the economies of both countries.

López Obrador also addressed concerns about American automakers moving production to Mexico, stating that bringing auto production back to the United States would significantly increase the cost of each vehicle for consumers. He emphasized the interconnectedness of the economies of the United States and Mexico, highlighting the importance of a steady flow of goods and materials across the border for manufacturing industries.

Despite disagreements and tensions between the two leaders, López Obrador and Trump maintained a relatively cordial relationship from 2018 to 2020. During this time, López Obrador agreed to use Mexico’s National Guard to prevent third-country migrants from crossing Mexico to reach the U.S. border, a policy he has continued under the current U.S. administration.

Overall, López Obrador’s comments reflect a desire to cultivate a positive relationship with the United States and address key issues such as immigration, trade, and economic stability between the two countries.
