Public input sought by DNR through accessibility survey

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking feedback from Hoosiers on the accessibility features at DNR properties across the state. A survey has been launched with five questions that aim to identify barriers that may prevent people from visiting these properties and to highlight which properties are most popular among residents. The feedback received through the survey will be used to update the DNR’s accessibility webpage and inform officials about potential enhancements that can be made to properties statewide.

In March, the DNR revamped its accessibility webpage to provide a more user-friendly experience for individuals with disabilities. Director Dan Bortner stated that outdoor experiences should be accessible to everyone and expressed excitement over the new accessibility webpage. Ric Edwards, DNR director of ADA compliance, emphasized the importance of removing barriers to nature for individuals with disabilities, sharing his personal experience of overcoming limitations placed on him after an injury.

The DNR offers a variety of accessible sites across Indiana for activities such as fishing, hunting, wildlife viewing, trail exploration, and beach visits. Specific properties are highlighted on the DNR’s website, showcasing features like paved roads for hunting at Pigeon River Fish & Wildlife Area and fishing piers at Trine State Recreation Area and Salamonie Lake. Additionally, disabled veterans can access discounted hunting and fishing licenses through the DNR. More information and the survey can be found online.
