Heavy rain causes landslides in northern Slovenia

Slovenia has been hit by severe storms and torrential rain, with over 230 weather-related incidents reported since Friday night. In Kokra, a village in the north, landslides caused three houses to be evacuated and a bridge to be swept away. Belgian scouts had to be rescued after their camp was also washed away by the storm. In the Logar Valley, a landslide blocked a road to the Rinka waterfall and two hikers needed assistance descending the mountains. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in the Karavanke mountain range and the Posavje region.

This comes after Slovenia’s worst national disaster in August 2023, when flash flooding impacted 183 out of 212 municipalities. Authorities have been working on a flash flood plan to better prepare for such intense rainfall, which is often linked to climate change. Meteorologists are monitoring the situation closely as the country continues to deal with the aftermath of the recent storms.

The effects of the recent extreme weather have highlighted the importance of being prepared for such natural disasters. The government and emergency services are working efficiently to respond to the incidents and ensure the safety of residents and visitors. The public is urged to stay informed and cautious during this time of heightened weather-related risks in Slovenia.
