Indiana’s SAT scores show a continued decline

In the last academic year, only 24% of Hoosier high schoolers who took the SAT met college-ready benchmarks in both reading and math, a decline compared to previous years. These results were discussed by the State Board of Education (SBOE) after being released by the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE). The State Board of Education also raised concerns about the new format of the SAT, which could have impacted student scores. Indiana Secretary of Education Katie Jenner emphasized the need for continued effort and partnerships between educators, parents, and families to improve student outcomes.

The state is currently undertaking major changes to high school graduation requirements, including proposed updates to diploma requirements. These changes aim to provide students with more flexibility in personalizing their learning pathways, including credits earned from college courses in high school, internships, apprenticeships, and work-based learning. College readiness marks on the SAT or ACT may also count towards the new “Indiana GPS Diploma.” These proposed changes are still in the process of being finalized and are expected to be implemented for the Class of 2029.

While the SAT scores show a decline in college readiness among Hoosier students, officials also acknowledge that the test may not accurately reflect the abilities and goals of all students. The ongoing redesign of high school requirements aims to address these challenges and provide students with a more personalized and flexible learning experience.
