Can VP Kamala Harris be added to Indiana’s ballots at this point? – Updates on Indianapolis News, Indiana Weather, and Traffic

The deadline for withdrawing from Indiana state elections in July does not apply to presidential candidates, according to election law expert Professor Derek Muller from Notre Dame Law School. Indiana Secretary of State Diego Morales confirmed that the deadline for Democratic Party presidential candidate certification is September 10.
Following President Joe Biden’s withdrawal and endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris, Muller mentioned that it is not too late to add a presidential candidate to the ballot in the U.S. The Democratic National Committee has yet to hold its convention. Ohio also extended its presidential ballot deadline to September 1 to align with the Democratic National Convention.
Professor Marjorie Hershey from IU Bloomington emphasized the importance for Democrats to appear united in their effort to defeat Donald Trump. While it is technically possible for another Democratic contender besides Harris to join the race, the chances of garnering the necessary 300 Democratic delegates for the nomination are slim at this stage.
The professors stressed the Democrats’ focus on presenting a unified front to avoid another four years of a Trump presidency. As the presidential election deadline approaches, the party is working to ensure compliance with state requirements and maintaining solidarity within the party.
