Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita, along with 17 states, is leading the charge to defend the religious liberty of a former Brownsburg High School teacher, John Kluge. Kluge was forced to resign after he declined to use the preferred names and pronouns of transgender students, citing violations of his beliefs. Initially, Kluge was allowed to call all students by their last names to avoid singling out transgender students, but the school district later required him to use preferred names and pronouns, leading to his resignation.
Rokita is asking the 7th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals to overturn a lower court ruling that claimed the school district could not accommodate Kluge’s religious beliefs without experiencing undue hardship. He argues that Title IX does not mandate the use of preferred names or pronouns and that requiring this goes against the First Amendment’s protection of religious liberty.
Rokita believes that pushing Kluge out of the classroom due to his religious beliefs not only sends the wrong message to students but also contributes to the shortage of teachers. He criticizes the school’s lack of compromise and highlights the importance of respecting religious convictions in a diverse society.
