Four individuals have been charged with federal money laundering and wire fraud in connection with the misappropriation of funds at now-closed Indiana charter schools. The charges stem from an investigation into the alleged misuse of taxpayer funds at the Indiana Virtual School (INVS) and Indiana Virtual Pathways Academy (IVPA).
The four individuals charged include the founder and former superintendent of both charter schools, as well as two other individuals connected to the schools. The indictment alleges that the defendants engaged in a scheme to fraudulently obtain over $68 million in state education funds by inflating student enrollment numbers and creating fake student profiles to receive additional funding.
The investigation uncovered evidence of money laundering and wire fraud, with funds being funnelled through various accounts and used for personal expenses such as luxury vehicles, vacations, and home renovations. Additionally, the defendants are accused of falsifying documents and misleading state officials in an attempt to cover up their fraudulent activities.
The closure of both charter schools in 2019 prompted an investigation by federal authorities, leading to the charges being filed against the four individuals. If convicted, they could face significant penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Indiana has stated that they are committed to holding accountable those who engage in fraudulent schemes that harm taxpayers and undermine the integrity of the education system.
