An apartment building on the northeast side of Indianapolis caught fire on Wednesday night, believed to be caused by a lightning strike. The fire at Bayview Club Apartments required help from Indianapolis and Lawrence fire departments to extinguish the flames and smoke rising above the roof of the third-story building. Fortunately, no residents were injured, but 35 were displaced, with one firefighter sustaining a minor injury. Firefighters responded to the scene at around 6:45 p.m. in the commercial area near East 75th Street and Shadeland Avenue. The incident was caught on an Indiana Department of Transportation traffic camera near the I-465 interchange for I-69, with several motorists sharing photos on social media as they passed by.
The American Red Cross was on-site to assist the displaced residents, and even a dog was rescued from the fire by the crews. It took about 90 minutes for firefighters to control the fire at the Bayview Club Apartments, which were constructed in 2004 and consist of over 230 units. News 8’s Adam Pinsker contributed to the report, documenting the intense blaze that caused havoc in the area. The incident serves as a reminder of the destructive power of lightning strikes and the importance of fire safety measures in residential buildings.
