Protesters block runways at Germany’s Frankfurt airport in climate activism demonstration

The climate action group, The Last Generation, is calling on the German government to divest from oil, gas, and coal by 2030. This call to action follows a protest at Frankfurt airport, where activists blocked runways by glueing themselves to the tarmac, leading to the suspension of arrivals and departures.

The group orchestrated the action, cutting a hole in a fence and making their way to different points around the runways. Banner messages reading “Oil kills” were displayed on the tarmac. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser condemned the demonstration as dangerous and criminal, stating that severe prison sentences should be imposed for such actions. Eight people were detained by the police.

Global aviation is responsible for about 2.5 percent of global carbon emissions, and The Last Generation is part of the A22 Network committed to non-violent climate protests, planning similar disruptions at airports across Europe and North America. Similar demonstrations have already taken place at Vienna and Cologne-Bonn airports, with more planned for the future.

Thursday’s protest at Frankfurt airport followed similar demonstrations at European airports, including London’s Heathrow, where activists were arrested. Activist Ronja Kuenkler stated that the protests were just the beginning, hinting at more actions to come. The group aims to push for a global agreement to exit oil, gas, and coal by 2030, advocating for urgent action to combat climate change as the world continues to grapple with its impact.
