Indiana third graders have shown improvement in reading scores for the third consecutive year, with 82.5% passing the I-Read assessment. This marks a .6 percentile increase from the previous school year and the third largest single-year improvement since the assessment began in 2013. Governor Eric Holcomb and Secretary of Education Dr. Katie Jenner have praised the hard work of teachers, families, and students in achieving these results. The state has made historic investments in literacy, which have seen positive outcomes for specific student populations.
While Black students, students in special education, and students from low-income backgrounds have shown improvement, Hispanic students and English learners saw slight decreases in literacy rates. Additional support is needed for these groups. The state is taking steps to continue progress, including launching a new data visualization tool, providing learning support and tutoring services, and offering professional development for educators.
Over 275 elementary schools in Indiana have achieved a 95% or higher passage rate on the IREAD assessment, an increase from the previous year. The state is also working on procuring a preferred universal screener provider to support schools with students in greatest need. With continued efforts and investments in literacy, Indiana aims to further improve reading skills for all students.
