The world is mourning the loss of Wally Amos, the beloved founder of Famous Amos cookies, who passed away at the age of 88. According to a statement from his children, Amos died from complications of dementia. Known for his Panama hat, kazoo, and boundless optimism, Amos was hailed as a true Black American hero and a source of Black pride.

Born in Tallahassee, Florida, Amos opened his bakery in Los Angeles in 1975, where he sold bite-sized chocolate chip cookies that quickly became a hit with Hollywood celebrities and musicians. In a 1991 interview, Amos expressed his passion for baking and creating a cookie empire out of a desire to do something he loved and have fun doing it.

Aside from his successful cookie business, Amos also made appearances in popular TV shows like “The Jeffersons,” “Taxi,” and “The Office,” where he was met with excitement and applause from the cast. Despite financial struggles, Amos sold the Famous Amos brand to a private equity group in 1988.

The legacy of Wally Amos and Famous Amos cookies lives on, with the current owner, Ferrero, expressing condolences for his passing. The world remembers Amos as a trailblazer and a true entrepreneur whose impact on the cookie industry and pop culture will never be forgotten.
