1.3 million BMW vehicles recalled due to potential Takata airbag inflator issue

BMW is recalling more than 1.3 million vehicles in China due to Takata airbag inflators, following a similar recall in the United States. The recall includes nearly 600,000 vehicles made in China between 2005 and 2017, as well as over 750,000 imported vehicles manufactured between 2003 and 2018. A variety of models are affected, from series 1 to series 6 cars, and X1 to X6 SUVs.

The recall was issued as a precautionary measure, as Takata airbag inflators have been linked to at least 35 deaths in various countries since 2009. In the United States, BMW recently recalled over 390,000 vehicles due to steering wheels that may have been replaced with ones equipped with Takata inflators.

Other car manufacturers, such as Ford and Mazda, have also issued warnings related to Takata airbag inflators in over 475,000 vehicles in the US. Stellantis has urged owners of 2003 Dodge Ram pickups to stop driving them if the airbag inflators have not been replaced.

In China, affected BMW owners can have their steering wheels checked at a dealer, or upload a photo of their steering wheel and vehicle identification number for inspection within two weeks. BMW will replace the driver’s side airbag free of charge for affected vehicles. Car owners are advised to take precautions and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure their safety.
