Unknown objects were placed on breakfast food at the hotel housing the Indiana delegation to the National Democratic Convention, authorities have confirmed. Police believe activists brought maggots into the Fairmont Hotel and have launched an investigation. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when several women entered the hotel and put the objects on tables that already had food on them. One victim was treated and released at the scene.
The Democratic National Convention stated that the incident took place at a building on North Columbus Drive around 6:45 a.m. Fairmont Hotel spokesperson Haley Robles confirmed that a group of individuals caused the disruption at a DNC-related breakfast event but stressed that the hotel acted immediately to clean and sanitize the area. Delegates from Indiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and South Dakota are reportedly staying at the hotel.
Sam Barloga of the Indiana delegation emphasized the importance of the safety and well-being of all delegates and condemned the attack, stating that peaceful protests are allowed but such ugly attacks have no place in a democracy. The hotel maintains the highest standards of food safety and cleanliness and has protocols in place to handle disruptions.
The Chicago Police Department and the FBI in Chicago are working together to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of all individuals involved. The actions of the activists responsible for the incident are currently being scrutinized as more details emerge.
