Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced Thursday that the investigation into Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department sergeant Javed Richards, who was caught with child pornography, is ongoing and more charges may be added. Richards faces 13 felony charges of child exploitation and one felony count of possession of child pornography. Police discovered Richards was trading child porn videos and images through the messaging app Kik. Mears stated that law enforcement was able to trace Richards’ activities after he switched from using encrypted emails and apps to his home Wi-Fi network. Mears emphasized the difficulty in building cases like these due to the sophisticated methods used to conceal illegal activities. The prosecutor’s office is now focused on identifying the individuals Richards sent child porn to on Kik and notifying law enforcement in those areas for further action. Richards has posted bond but must surrender his passports and firearms before being released from jail. The investigation continues as authorities work towards uncovering the full extent of Richards’ involvement in this criminal activity.
