The online version of From the Politics Desk newsletter covers various political topics, including Vice President Kamala Harris’ upcoming speech at the Democratic National Convention and the Democratic Party’s strategy for the upcoming election.
Vice President Kamala Harris is focusing her campaign on positive vibes and avoiding laying out detailed policy plans. Her campaign has so far emphasized joy, vision, and values, with few concrete policy proposals being presented. Harris has refrained from outlining a comprehensive plan for the economy or national security, instead focusing on more general themes.
Harris is set to deliver a history-making convention speech as the first Black woman and first Asian American person to accept a major party’s nomination for president. The speech will highlight her personal and professional background, contrast her vision with former President Donald Trump’s, and emphasize patriotism. Harris plans to praise President Joe Biden in her speech and connect her policy proposals with her middle-class upbringing.
The Democratic National Convention will also feature prominent speakers like Sen. Elizabeth Warren, and musical guests including Pink and The Chicks. On the other side, former President Donald Trump expressed willingness to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, even if it may cost trillions of dollars. He did not rule out separating families, including those with mixed-status, citizen, and undocumented members.
