Bears cornerback Douglas Coleman III was immobilized and taken from Arrowhead Stadium in an ambulance after a tackle during a preseason game against the Chiefs. Coleman’s head bent awkwardly on impact, leaving him motionless on the field. Trainers and doctors rushed to his aid, and he was eventually loaded onto a cart and taken to the hospital for evaluation. Bears coach Matt Eberflus noted that Coleman was moving his limbs and gave a thumbs-up while being attended to.
Despite the scare, the Bears went on to win the preseason game 34-21. Coleman played college football at Texas Tech, transitioning from cornerback to safety as a senior and earning All-Big 12 honors. After going undrafted in 2020, he signed with the Broncos and spent time on their practice squad before joining the Ottawa Redblacks in the CFL. Coleman had a successful season with the Redblacks, recording 60 tackles, four sacks, three interceptions, and returning both an interception and a fumble for touchdowns in 17 games.
The incident at Arrowhead Stadium highlights the risks and dangers associated with professional football, but also the resilience and determination of the players who compete in the sport. Fans and colleagues are hopeful for Coleman’s recovery and are relieved to hear that he was conscious and responsive following the scary moment on the field.
