Indiana Statehouse renovations in final phase

Crews have started the final phase of repairs on the 136-year-old Indiana Statehouse building that began in 2018. This phase includes repairing gutters, cleaning windows, cleaning the dome, and conducting chimney and masonry work. In previous phases, crews cleaned and fixed the limestone facade, rebuilt stairways and doors, replaced joint seals, and installed water infiltration barriers under the staircases, costing $10.8 million.

The Indiana Capital Chronicle reported that the dome extends 243 feet above the ground, and a massive crane on the capitol grounds is helping with the repair work. The dome was re-clad in copper in 1978, but exposure to the weather has caused it to change to green over time, similar to the Statue of Liberty in New York City.

The repairs to the Indiana Statehouse building are crucial to ensure its structural integrity and preserve its historical significance. The completion of this final phase will mark the end of a comprehensive restoration project that has been ongoing for several years. Officials are optimistic that the building will be in top condition once all repairs are completed, allowing it to continue serving as a symbol of Indiana’s rich history and heritage.
