Man convicted of fatally shooting cousin by jury – News from Indianapolis | Weather and Traffic in Indiana

Emmanuel Lee Newman, an Indianapolis man, was found guilty of the murder of his cousin Joshua Hopson after a three-day trial. The incident took place in December 2022 at The Lodge Apartments in Indianapolis. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office stated that Hopson’s girlfriend testified that there was an argument between the two before the shooting occurred. Surveillance footage showed Newman approaching Hopson with a rifle and firing multiple shots before fleeing the scene. Newman had previous charges of domestic battery and intimidation in 2022, but those were dismissed. In 2018, he was found not guilty of attempted murder.

Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears expressed his concern over the violence among family members and the devastating consequences it brings. The jury reached a resolution in Newman’s case, but a sentencing date has not been set yet. The Prosecutor’s Office is supporting the victim’s family during this difficult time.

The case highlights the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and avoiding escalation to violence. The community is encouraged to seek help and use mediation services to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring. Newman’s conviction serves as a reminder of the need for conflict resolution and the devastating impact of violence within families.
