Suspected Solingen attacker arrested; regional minister confirms Germany mass stabbing

A stabbing rampage in the western German city of Solingen has resulted in the death of three people, with a suspect now in police custody. The suspect was arrested after a manhunt, with authorities following a hot lead that led to the arrest. Police made two earlier arrests that were not the perpetrator before apprehending the real suspect.

Authorities have not yet commented on a possible terrorist motive for the attack, and investigations are ongoing. A 15-year-old has also been detained on suspicion of failing to report a crime, and a second arrest was made at a home for refugees in Solingen, although no more details were provided on the individual or the connection to the incident.

The mass stabbing occurred during a festival celebrating the city’s 650th anniversary, and witnesses reported that the assailant attacked people at random with a knife. Several people were injured, and additional measures were taken by authorities in the immediate aftermath of the attack.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has expressed shock at the incident and emphasized the need to swiftly catch and punish the perpetrator. The festival and other related events in nearby towns have been cancelled following the attack. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities have urged witnesses with information to come forward via a dedicated website and telephone hotline.
