Indiana legislators delve into artificial intelligence and its potential applications in government

A task force in Indiana led by Rep. Matt Lehman (R-Berne) recently had its first meeting to discuss the pros and cons of artificial intelligence (AI). Lehman shared insights gathered from ChatGPT, an AI platform, and highlighted the potential benefits and risks associated with AI technology.

The state government in Indiana is already utilizing AI in various ways, such as the Department of Workforce Development using it to provide recommendations for individuals seeking unemployment benefits. The Office of Technology is also employing AI to enhance internal security measures and is testing a chat bot for public access to state government information.

During the meeting, IOT Chief Information Officer Tracy Barnes assured lawmakers that data inputted into the chat bot remains within the state government’s confines and is not shared with external sources. The focus is on implementing governance and security measures to protect sensitive information.

Lawmakers plan to further explore AI-related issues, including the potential need for regulations in state law and assessing the costs associated with integrating AI into state government operations. Brandon, the Statehouse bureau chief, can be reached at bsmith@ipbs.org for more information and updates on this topic.

This article aims to inform readers about Indiana’s endeavors with AI technology and the steps being taken to ensure data privacy and security within the state government’s AI initiatives.
