Alfred W. Ruf, a 71-year-old man from Indiana, pleaded guilty on Monday to lacing his wife’s Coca-Cola with cocaine, MDMA, and benzodiazepines in a twisted plot to kill her and marry her daughter. Ruf admitted to poisoning his wife’s drink roughly a dozen times between September and December 2021. He claimed his stepdaughter and her friend convinced him to go ahead with the plan and provided him with the drugs to use. Ruf stated that his stepdaughter wanted to get rid of her mother to cash in on her life insurance policy and had promised to marry him after the deed was done.
The concoction of substances Ruf put in his wife’s drink would cause her to be knocked out for approximately 13 hours each time. His wife became suspicious after being hospitalized multiple times in a matter of weeks and testing positive for drugs she had not taken. She contacted the police, leading to Ruf’s arrest. Tests showed traces of cocaine, MDMA, and benzodiazepines in her system. Ruf was sentenced to four years in prison for aggravated battery posing a risk of death, with a conspiracy to commit murder charge dropped as part of the plea deal. Authorities are still investigating the stepdaughter and her friend, but no arrests have been made yet.
The shocking case of attempted murder has raised concerns about the extent some individuals would go to for personal gain. Ruf’s actions have deeply impacted his family and have led to serious legal repercussions for himself.
