The Indiana Sports Hall of Fame hosted an event in Evansville, Indiana, this weekend that kicked off with “an evening with Indiana Sports Legends.” The event took place at the Old National Events Plaza and featured this year’s inductees, as well as past inductees, who shared their experiences and memories with attendees.
Among the notable attendees was Purdue Basketball great and Evansville North High School alum, Dave Schellhase, who fondly reflected on his time playing basketball in the Tri-State area. He mentioned how memorable it was to compete against top teams like Evansville Bosse and Rex Mundy during his high school years.
Other distinguished guests included Mike Blake and Carl Nicks, who had his jersey retired by the Indiana State Sycamores. Nicks expressed his joy at being in the company of former athletes and new inductees, emphasizing the importance of coming together to share stories and experiences.
Another highlight of the evening was Linda Yearby, who broke barriers by joining the boys team at Midway’s all-boys high school team in Spencer County. Despite facing challenges and criticism, Yearby’s courage paved the way for female basketball players in the area, and she expressed her excitement about the growth of women’s basketball since her time.
The event was a celebration of Indiana sports history and the accomplishments of legendary athletes from the state. Attendees were able to connect with sports icons, hear inspiring stories, and celebrate the progress of women’s basketball. The Indiana Sports Hall of Fame event in Evansville was a memorable and inspirational evening for all who attended.
