Two men from Michigan City, Indiana are facing charges of animal neglect following a yearlong investigation into an incident that resulted in the deaths of at least nine dogs. Michael McHenry, 55, and Jessee Urbaszewski, 44, are facing a total of 10 animal neglect charges in connection to the incident that occurred in July 2023.
The dogs were found in a box truck at a gas station in Lake Station, Indiana, after the air conditioning in the truck failed while they were being transported from Chicago to a training facility in Michigan. The temperatures in the Chicago area reached 92 degrees on the day of the incident, leading to the dogs becoming distressed.
The driver of the truck discovered the dogs in distress and began removing them from their crates, prompting 911 calls. The Lake Station Police Department stated that they believed the incident was due to a mechanical failure of the AC unit and not intentional cruelty or neglect towards the animals.
The Lake County prosecutor has requested the Indiana State Police to further investigate the case. The Humane Society of Hobart Inc. has been involved in the investigation and has spoken out against the neglect of the animals. The two men are set to face the consequences of their actions as the legal process unfolds.
