The Indiana University School of Medicine is conducting a groundbreaking study aimed at improving the prediction and prevention of breast cancer using Artificial Intelligence. The project involves collaboration with prestigious institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Pennsylvania, and Columbia University.
Unlike traditional collaborations, this 5-year study will utilize a ‘federated learning’ format, allowing AI to be trained using information from various sources while ensuring data privacy and security. Director Spyridon Bakas highlights the importance of this method in accessing diverse data without compromising patient confidentiality.
Funded by a $3.7 million grant from the National Cancer Institute, the study will focus on data from patients undergoing 3D digital breast tomosynthesis, a popular cancer screening method. The goal is to develop models that can predict the development of breast cancer in women much earlier and assess their risk for the future.
By taking a proactive approach to prediction rather than diagnosis, researchers hope to provide patients with valuable information about their breast cancer risk. With the use of AI and federated learning, the study aims to enhance trust among patients and alleviate concerns about the security of their private data.
