Houthis share video of fighters boarding Greek oil tanker in the Red Sea

Yemen’s Houthi rebels have released a video showing explosions on the oil tanker, Sounion, which they attacked in the Red Sea. The ship is carrying nearly one million barrels of crude oil, sparking fears of a major oil spill and environmental catastrophe. The Houthi military spokesperson said the ship violated their blockade against Israel-bound vessels.

The Houthis have been targeting ships they claim are linked to Israel, the US, and the UK as a way to pressure these countries to end conflicts in Gaza and Yemen. The recent video shows drone footage of explosions on the ship’s surface, but not in the area where the oil is stored. Despite concerns, the ship remains anchored, and there has been no confirmed oil spill.

Efforts are being made to salvage the ship and prevent environmental damage in the Red Sea, a major global sea route with a unique marine ecosystem. The EU’s military mission in the region is involved in diplomatic efforts to salvage the vessel, while the US is monitoring the situation and has noted possible oil leaks.

The Houthis have communicated with international parties to allow for salvage efforts, but have warned away tugs attempting to help. The group’s targeting of the ship is seen as a serious enforcement of their Red Sea ban on ships connected to Israel. The tensions stem from recent attacks between Israel and the Houthis, with the latter promising retaliation for Israeli airstrikes.
