Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett addressed questions from the media regarding the investigation into sexual harassment allegations against his former aide, Thomas Cook. Three women have accused Cook of misconduct, with the mayor stating he was unaware of these allegations until 2023. Cook was initially let go in 2017 after inappropriate advances, then rehired for the mayor’s 2023 reelection campaign.
Hogsett admitted that he wished the city had implemented annual sexual harassment training for all employees sooner. He recently issued an executive order mandating that all city employees undergo annual sexual harassment training. Additionally, a new anonymous reporting website for employees to report sexual harassment was launched by the city-county government.
At the opening of a mixed-use building on the Old Southside, Hogsett expressed uncertainty about the outcome of the investigation into Cook’s alleged misconduct. He mentioned being aware of the nature of the allegations but was unsure of the extent of the investigation. Despite the controversy surrounding Cook, the mayor remains focused on the development and progress of the city.
The situation involving Cook has raised concerns about transparency and accountability within the mayor’s administration. With ongoing scrutiny from the media and the public, Mayor Hogsett will need to address these issues and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent and address sexual harassment within city government.
