Elon Musk criticized voting by mail as an invitation to fraud, but records show he himself voted by mail twice while living in California. His voting history includes sparse participation in elections, with him only voting in the November 2016 and 2018 elections. Musk canceled his California registration in August 2020 and announced he had moved to Texas in December 2020. Despite his criticisms of mail-in voting, Musk’s own Super PAC encouraged swing state voters to cast absentee ballots by mail. He also voted by absentee ballot in Texas in 2020 and in an election in Texas in June 2022. Musk is registered to vote in Brownsville, Texas, where SpaceX operates, even though he lives in Austin as of December, according to Business Insider. Although Musk endorsed Trump in the past, he voted for Clinton in 2016 and Biden in 2020. Musk has criticized voting by mail on social media platform X, mixing falsehoods with partial truths. Despite Musk’s claims about fraud, investigations have shown that widespread voter fraud is almost nonexistent. Musk’s criticism of voting by mail contrasts with his own use of it, along with other high-profile figures like Donald Trump who have criticized it while also engaging in mail-in voting. California now has a universal mail-in voting system.
