A recent poll conducted by Reuters/Ipsos found that Vice President Kamala Harris was viewed as the winner of the debate against former President Donald Trump. The poll also showed Harris leading Trump nationally among registered voters by a five percentage point margin. Of those who heard about the debate, 53% believed Harris won compared to 24% who thought Trump won. Harris, 59, put Trump, 78, on the defensive during the debate with her attacks on his fitness for office and legal troubles.
Following the debate, Trump’s pollsters claim that his support has increased in swing states, with Trump leading Harris in a head-to-head matchup. However, the Trump campaign is facing criticism for the influence of right-wing conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, who was identified as promoting false claims about Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.
Additionally, pop star Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Harris after the debate led to a surge in voter registrations. Swift’s post directing followers to vote.org resulted in over 400,000 referrals to the site in just 24 hours.
The Senate races are heating up as well, with the Cook Political Report forecasting a likely shift to GOP control. Despite Democrat Joe Manchin’s retirement in West Virginia, Republicans have a chance to gain control of the Senate. The importance of the upcoming joint session of Congress has been highlighted by the Department of Homeland Security, designating it as a “national special security event” given the events of January 6, 2021.
