A Plainfield Police Department officer was involved in a shooting with one of two suspects in a U-Haul theft, resulting in the suspect being sent to the hospital. The incident occurred during a police pursuit of a wanted felon in a stolen U-Haul truck. The pursuit started in Marion County and ended on I-70 when the suspects abandoned the U-Haul and attempted to flee on foot. One suspect was apprehended, while the other stole a box truck and rammed a garage door and gate at a local business before turning aggressively toward officers, leading to the shooting. The injured suspect suffered a dog bite and a gunshot wound to the leg.
Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the pursuit, including the Plainfield police, Marion and Hendricks counties’ sheriff’s offices, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, and Indiana State Police. State police will handle the investigation, and the officer who fired the weapon has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation by the Plainfield Police Department.
This incident came shortly after a tragic police pursuit in Plainfield on Aug. 30 that resulted in the deaths of two elderly individuals who appeared to not see or hear the police vehicle. The Avon Police Department is still investigating that crash. The Plainfield community is shaken by these recent events and is waiting for more information to understand the circumstances surrounding both incidents.
