A recent incident of theft on an IndyGo bus has prompted one Indianapolis man to call for increased security on the city’s transit system. Bill Malcom had his cellphone snatched by two juveniles while riding the Red Line rapid-transit bus on Sept. 8. IndyGo reports that thefts against riders are rare, with only five reported in the past 18 months. However, Malcom believes that the lack of security on buses is allowing troublemakers to run rampant.
IndyGo has stated that they employ security and law enforcement officers to patrol routes and properties, and have increased the number of fare inspectors on bus rapid transit lines to enforce payment. Despite these efforts, Malcom has expressed concerns that crimes like these are affecting businesses in neighborhoods like Broad Ripple and deterring people from using public transit.
The incident has left an impact on the community, with reports that some individuals are avoiding using the Red Line due to safety concerns. Malcom’s own hairdresser refuses to take the Red Line despite living along the route.
While IndyGo has not released surveillance footage of the incident, they have assured the public that they take every incident seriously and are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all riders. Malcom’s call for increased security on buses highlights the importance of addressing these issues to maintain a safe and reliable public transit system in Indianapolis.
