The United States has announced new sanctions against Russia’s state media outlet RT, accusing the network of engaging in covert influence operations, cyber capabilities, and providing material support and weaponry to Russian military units in Ukraine. The US State Department stated that RT has moved beyond being a simple media outlet and is now involved in information operations targeting countries around the world.
This move comes amid ongoing tension between the US and Russia over the invasion of Ukraine and allegations of Russian interference in elections. The US government has issued multiple waves of sanctions against Russian individuals and companies since the conflict began. Last week, the Justice Department announced actions to counter Russian meddling in elections, including criminal charges against two RT employees accused of participating in a Moscow-directed influence operation.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of shining a light on Russia’s actions and exposing their disinformation efforts. He stated that RT has created fake news websites to spread propaganda and disinformation globally, and has expanded its cyber operations with ties to Russian intelligence.
In response to the sanctions, Russia’s embassy in Washington did not immediately comment, while RT responded with a mocking email. The US sees shining a light on Russia’s activities as the best defense against their propaganda efforts, stating that the truth is the most powerful antidote to Russia’s lies.
