NWS to assess tornado damage in Jay and Delaware counties – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

Hoosiers in Jay and Delaware counties are cleaning up after likely tornadoes hit the area on Sunday. Meteorologists from the National Weather Service are set to assess the damage and evaluate the strength of the storms on Monday. Jay County students will not have classes as a tornado caused significant damage to the junior-senior high school in Portland.

Photos of the damage at the high school were shared on social media. The Jay County Emergency Management Agency reported storm damage in the Beacon Heights area and on the west side of Portland. Luckily, there have been no reported injuries. In Delaware County, another tornado was confirmed.

A viewer sent News 8 video footage showing a rotating funnel cloud, and additional footage of a landspout was captured from I-69 in Muncie. The tornado caused the collapse of the TK Constructors building in Commack, just north of Yorktown, according to the Yorktown Fire Department. Thankfully, no injuries were reported from this incident.

The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. Authorities are working to assess the full extent of the damage and formulate a plan for recovery in both Jay and Delaware counties. Residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions as the cleanup process begins.
