Climate change dominates discussions at UNGA: Understanding the concept of “polluter pays” and planetary danger zones


World leaders gathered in New York for the annual UN General Assembly where the ‘Summit of the Future’ took place ahead of the general debate. Speakers at the Summit warned of the emerging threats of conflict and climate change, highlighting the need for immediate action. A group of scientists presented the first annual planetary health check, revealing that Earth is in the danger zone in six out of nine special systems, with another at risk of breaching the boundary.

The Pact for the Future, a blueprint aimed at addressing global challenges, was agreed upon on Sunday with a focus on climate change. John Podesta, Biden’s top climate official, highlighted the success of US efforts in fighting climate change. The plan aims to guide UN member states in working together to tackle significant global challenges, such as climate change and energy security.
