A Russian military patrol aircraft trespassed into Japanese airspace near Hokkaido’s Rebun Island three times on Monday, leading Japan’s Self-Defense Force to respond by dispatching fighter jets and firing flares. This was the first time Japanese aircraft have used flares in response to an airspace violation. The SDF fighter jets gave verbal warnings to the Russian military before resorting to firing flares during the third incursion. Defense Minister Minoru Kihara stated that Japan has lodged a formal protest with Russia through diplomatic channels and has demanded that such violations not happen again.
