The father of two triplet babies who were murdered by nurse Lucy Letby has described the frantic scenes in the hospital as the children collapsed. Letby injected air into the bloodstream of one child and into the stomachs of two others. These deaths in 2016 were a turning point for consultants who suspected Letby and demanded her removal from the hospital. Letby was recently sentenced to 15 whole-life orders after being convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others.
The ongoing public inquiry, led by Lady Justice Thirlwall, is examining events at the hospital’s neonatal unit during Letby’s time there. The father of the babies, who cannot be named, described the chaos and lack of expertise among the medical staff as they tried to save his children.
He recalled seeing doctors and nurses searching online for procedures, including one nurse Google searching a lung drain procedure. The father expressed concerns about the hospital’s lack of transparency and believes they knew more about Letby’s crimes than they have admitted publicly.
He also mentioned his confusion over Letby’s behavior, feeling she was devastated after one of his children passed away, which was in stark contrast to her cold and robotic demeanor during the shifts. The inquiry continues as further details emerge surrounding Letby’s actions and the hospital’s handling of the situation.
