Former Orange County prosecutor Stewart Rosenwasser died by suicide as FBI agents arrived to arrest him on bribery charges. The indictment alleges he accepted over $63,000 in bribe payments while working for the district attorney’s office. When the FBI arrived at his home, he reportedly pointed a gun at the agents, leading to a fatal shot being fired. The indictment also accuses him of using his position to investigate and prosecute individuals at the request of a co-defendant, a self-proclaimed millionaire and former restaurant owner, in exchange for bribes. Payments continued until May 2024, totaling at least $63,000. Rosenwasser allegedly lied about his relationship with the co-defendant to hide his criminal conduct. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment, while Orange County DA David Hoovler expressed condolences to Rosenwasser’s family. Rosenwasser received awards during his time in the DA’s office but quietly resigned in June. The FBI’s Inspection Division is reviewing the agent-involved shooting. The case has shocked the community and raised concerns about corruption within the justice system.
