A team from Indiana Task Force 1 has been deployed to Florida to assist in recovery efforts ahead of Tropical Storm Helene, which is expected to become a hurricane. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has activated 80 members of the Indiana search-and-rescue team to help with storm warnings and evacuation orders in place for the Sunshine State. Ryan Cusack, a search-and-rescue operator with the Crown Point Fire Department, will be using a Labrador retriever named Jake to search for survivors who may be too weak or unconscious to call for help. This will be Jake’s last hurricane rescue mission before he retires at the end of the year. The Indiana Task Force 1 crew is well-equipped and ready to assist local authorities overwhelmed by the approaching storm surge. Battalion Chief Jay Settergen of the Indianapolis Fire Department emphasized that the team is prepared to fill any voids and provide necessary assistance to those impacted by the storm. The team’s expertise and dedication to helping those in need will be crucial in the aftermath of the storm.
